Prince – the multi talented artist
This portrait is done in one to three layers of denim. The denim is fixed on a canvas. Measure 80 x 100cm.
All portraits are done in denim. I call it “denim art”. I enjoy the transformation from a couple of old jeans to contemporary art. The portraits are meant to be recognisable to the viewer, and also express my creative interpretation of the person.
My motivation is to honour a great artist and my idealism about waste-issues and consumerism.
The history of this portrait
A concussion had me laying in bed in April 2016. After two weeks it did not get better. It got worse. When my self-pitty was at its highest Prince sudddently passed away.
Listening to his music for days my mind started to be occupied with questions about life, living it, dying too early and vulnerability. I realised that it was time to unfold my creativity in a new way, and I had the idea that some of my wasted denim material (that I had from different re:design projects) could be transformed into portraits and art.
So I began creating this portrait during my recovery and found out that it had a wonderful healing effect on me. I new I had to continue along this path.
Prince and denim
I am not sure that Price had the same denim-passion as I do. He just liked special outfits in general. But in 1987 is was denim.
