This Jimi Hendrix portrait contains layers of grey and black denim. And a bit leather also. Measure 60 x 80cm.
All portraits are done in denim. I call it “denim art”. I enjoy the transformation from a couple of old jeans to contemporary art. The portraits are meant to be recognisable to the viewer, and also express my creative interpretation of the person.
My motivation is to honour a great artist and my idealism about waste-issues and consumerism.
Jimi Hendrix was never a big thing for me when I was younger. Much later in life I found an interest and I think that I only got to understand very little of how important and mindblowing his talent was for his time.
In general I really like stories of single persons making a big impact by only following a will and passion. He did that. He died at the age of only 27, and I am amazed of how inspiring his talent has been to so many musicians after him. Thought-provoking to think that Jimi really never loved being on stage. To him it was the necessary evil. Things has changed.
All the Jimi Hendrix music I did not know and some of the stories about him – I caught up on it in the creation of this portrait.
I realized that I had be artistical free in choosing to include two things in it. His scarf around his head and his jacket. I think the two things never really were used together. I asume they were used in different periods of his life.
